Yeovil District Hospital SSD
Yeovil District Hospital (YDH) NHS Foundation Trust have contracted cfes Medical Construction for the development of a new, modern and innovative Sterile Services Department (SSD) for cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation of instruments used in patient operations. Previous departments like this have been part of the national framework however YDH will incorporate their SSD into the existing hospital with the intention of providing local jobs while improving the service and keeping it within the local community.
Sometimes known as a Decontamination Units their role is to reprocess re useable medical devices reducing the risk of the spread of disease. Improved facilities will help minimise further the chances of infection reducing the risk of ubiquitous bacteria particularly the resistant strain of staphylococcus known as MRSA.
The new SSD will be located at level 5, adjacent to the existing operating theatre suites, this will enable provision of a more efficient service.
cfes Ltd, have been awarded the contract to build the new SSD and will bring to the project team a wealth of experience in designing and constructing Sterile Services Units. The new facility will be built using modern methods of construction to improve construction quality standards and finish and to minimise disruption to the existing hospital operation.
With ambitions for the project to achieve a Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment rating of Excellent the new unit will be designed and built with a focus on creating an environment conducive to the health and wellbeing of staff with no negative impact on the surrounding environment and ecology. Energy recovery from the sterilisation process and re-use for general heating and hot water functions will be employed to reduce the overall CO2 footprint of the new building.
